It started with this small marketing firm, only 12 of us and few contractors. Kind of a boutique outfit. Fancy. Snazzy. Sometimes snooty.
And by gosh we got the job done. I’m still proud of the websites and marketing projects we did. You may have seen some of them.
But what happened was this —
Originally a handful of us created a custom software company. And back around 1998, while working with our customers, they asked us about marketing, as well as the software. And we realized that the question really was:
“How to promote your company or yourself on search engines?”
Because this became the key point. We helped with pay-per-click, and SEO, and media buys, but again and again the success of promotion online came back to Google, and as we focused more and more on marketing for our clients, we grew to twelve people. We had people working on programming, system administration, content management, SEO and PPC.
And all of it was about how to market.

You see where this is going. Because we were helping our clients where they actually needed the most help, our business did less and less custom software and more and more marketing work.
And being in charge, I learned what works.
Not long after, I faced a significant move, and that led me to leave the company, and a funny thing happened.
A friend approached me, and asked how he could clean up a sudden mess that had developed under his personal and his business names. And as I was helping him to fix that, someone another call came in with a totally different issue, and then another friend decided it would be smart to set up some “advance protection,” and then suddenly it hit me:
